Guest Lecture - Erik Knudsen

I am very pleased to announce that next Wednesday (7th Dec) afternoon there is a guest lecture from Professor Erik Knusden

You are in college during the morning so I recommend that you stay for the afternoon - Erik was my lecturer at Salford (he's Yoda to my Luke Skywalker) and I can therefore say, with absolute confidence, that you will gain a lot from this session if you attend...

Erik Knudsen is Professor of Film Practice at the University of Salford in Manchester, UK, where he is currently the Head of The School of Media Music and Performance. He regularly conducts guest workshops at international film schools, such as the Escuela Internacional de Cine y Television in Cuba, where he was Head of Editing between 2001 and 2009. He was born in Ghana to a Danish father and Ghanaian mother in 1956. He grew up, and was primarily educated, in Denmark, with a few years of schooling in Britain. After a stint of Law studies at Ã…rhus University in Denmark, he then went on to study film production at York University in Toronto, Canada, from where he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts with Specialist Honours in Film Production in 1983. He returned to Britain in 1984, where he has lived and worked since. He gained his PhD from the University of Salford, 2002

Unit 16 - Point 2

Unit Content

Be able to prepare moving image material for editing
Preparation techniques: checking material for faults; synchronising rushes; producing a rushes log; marking up a script; labelling tapes; storing tapes or film; producing an edit decision list; creating bins; clarifying the purpose of the work with a client or director
Preparing to edit: importing clips; bins; timelines; storage and folder management; online and offline editing; formats; resolution

Criteria

Merit - Learners will apply editing preparation techniques systematically and the documents they produce will be functional and prepared with some care. There will be a recognition of why such documentation is necessary. However, rushes logs will typically lack full detail, edit decision lists will over-simplify sequences and the organisation of paperwork will lack proper rigour.

Distinction - Work will be characterised by preparation which is thorough, systematic and detailed. Rushes logs will show a full appreciation of the possibilities and limitations of shots, and edit decision lists will provide a fully detailed blueprint for the final piece. All paperwork will be clear and organised to a near-professional standard.

Ofsted Video Feedback

Damian has written some feedback for the Ofsted videos that you did:

Sorry that I wasn’t able to get to see the students in person as planned.

Firstly, thanks to all the students. I really enjoyed watching these and was highly impressed by their skills and how speedily they were able to apply my relatively vague description and brief to such precise work.

James

Nice opening North by North West that immediately gives a sense of urgency and pursuit. The extract from the Birds heightens the sense of danger which culminates in the screams and the extract from Rear Window adds to the sense of watching. Might be too threatening for its purpose

Chevy

Unable to play effectively but noticed Home Alone extracts which undermines the threat (parodies it) effectively and added to the humour. Good touch.

Josh

Good montage of films which raise the interest; Godzilla, King Kong, The Shining, War of the Worlds and adds to the contrasts and Shawshank Redemption against the words; there is no escape gives a poignant ending.

Horror

Effective use of Jaws in opening interspersed with black background credits heightens threat whilst Shaun of the Dead adds humour. Likewise Rockschool and classroom observation which is a very clever link up. Bruce Campbell’s telephone warning at the end rounds it off nicely.

Joel

Could not open – sorry, Joel. Happy to look at it at a later point.

Molly

Very effective opening with turns of the head and the unseen ‘thing’. I like the variety of films, War of the Worlds, Independence Day, and Deep Blue Sea. Not sure of the end credit of worst days of your life and whether this would have the desired effect. Slick piece though.

No names on second DVD but

Screams [Noel]

This works very well. The melodramatic sequences from King Kong et al are highly effective. The contrast of screams in terms of style and the repetitiveness of the reaction give it a suitably comic appeal. Key drawback is the falling from building into ambulance which I believe would be too graphic for the target audience. Overall though, funny and very well put together.

They’re here already [Noel]

This has all the elements required. Suspense, mystery, the unseen, the perceived terror, good images mixed with dramatic music and highly effective sections of dialogue that are particularly apposite to the purpose. The dialogue which offers the quiet confirmation, ‘I don’t want any part of it’. ‘You’re forgetting, Miles, you have no choice.’ is a highly intelligent touch. This is the one I will use for presentation to staff.

Thanks again and well done to all.
