Clothing Reminder...

Remember - do not turn up in your best clothes on Monday as we will be filming outdoors and could get muddy as we are filming on grass (it is approaching winter too)...

I wouldn't want you to ruin your best gear...that means tops, trousers and shoes

Extension Activity (17/10/11)

Wednesday 26th of October is Diwali.

BBC: "Diwali is perhaps the most well-known of the Hindu festivals.

The word Diwali means 'rows of lighted lamps'. Diwali is known as the 'festival of lights' because houses, shops and public places are decorated with small earthenware oil lamps called diyas

Celebrating Diwali:
For many Indians this five day festival honours Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth.
People start the new business year at Diwali, and some Hindus will say prayers to the goddess for a successful year.
Lamps are lit to help Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, find her way into people's homes.
They also celebrate one of the Diwali legends, which tells of the return of Rama and Sita to Rama's kingdom after fourteen years of exile.

In Britain, as in India, the festival is a time for:
spring-cleaning the home,
wearing new clothes
exchanging gifts (often sweets and dried fruits) and preparing festive meals
decorating buildings with fancy lights.
huge firework displays often celebrate Divali.
In India Hindus will leave the windows and doors of their houses open so that Lakshmi can come in. Rangoli are drawn on the floors - rangoli are patterns and the most popular subject is the lotus flower.

The meaning of Diwali:
The festival celebrates the victory of good over evil, light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance, although the actual legends that go with the festival are different in different parts of India:

In northern India and elsewhere, Diwali celebrates Rama's return from fourteen years of exile to Ayodhya after the defeat of Ravana and his subsequent coronation as king;
In Gujarat, the festival honours Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth;
In Nepal Diwali commemorates the victory of Lord Krishna over the demon king Narakaasura;
In Bengal, it is associated with the goddess Kali."

Dear participant/Student

I would like to ask you to participate in the data collection for a work-based study into the use of an electronic Critical Incident Questionnaire (CIQ).
For the purposes of this work-based study the questionnaire will be used to discover how you are experiencing teaching sessions. Its usefulness is underlined by the experience that student responses often differ markedly from what teachers have expected on the basis of their own feelings in the classroom (Brookfield 1995: 95-96).
The CIQ requires you to answer five questions that describe aspects of teaching sessions, prompting teachers to think about what is helping or hindering their learning so far. Your responses are anonymous and you are encouraged to keep a copy too for review at the end of the course and for your own records. You will be asked to complete the CIQ at the end of each class and are the same every week.

Brookfield began giving students a voice, in this particular way, in the era of carbon paper! But nowadays the facilities available to us include electronic mail and virtual learning environments. Therefore, we will be asking you to submit your electronic CIQ to the specific CIQ page on the course blog.

Your participation in this work-based study is entirely voluntary. Filling in the survey will take no more than 5 minutes. The information you provide is confidential. All of your CIQ responses are anonymous and therefore no participant’s names will be used. If you request confidentiality, beyond anonymised quotes, information you provide will be treated only as a source of background information, alongside literature-based research and potential interviews with other participants.

Your name or any other personal identifying information will not appear in any publications resulting from this study. The information gained from this interview will only be used for the above objectives, will not be used for any other purpose and will not be recorded in excess of what is required for the research.

Even though the study findings will be published in a Thesis, international conferences and journals, only relevant researchers will have access to the anonymous CIQ responses. These researchers will be bound by the principles outlined above. There are no known or anticipated risks to you as a participant in this work-based study.

If you have any questions regarding this study or would like additional information please contact the work-based study researcher (
p.smith7@unimail.derby.ac.uk).

By filling in the CIQ (every occasion) you indicate that you understand its purpose and consent to the use of the data as indicated above. This is a completely voluntary request and should you decide not to complete the CIQ at any point during the work-based study, the data you have already entered up to that point will be used.
Thank you for your cooperation

Television Advertising Assignment Brief Unit 30

I've Attached the TV Advertising Brief to this post.

We are not meant to start the assignment until after the October Half Term. However, considering that a number of students have completed the first practical assignment I thought it might be a good idea for you to read through the brief and conduct some preliminary research.

During next Tuesday's lesson I will go through the brief in more detail and I will also deliver a presentation on .1 of the unit - a digital presentation.

Please read the brief throughly!!!!!

Remember, the advertising competition that was identified earlier in the blog - you can also use this as an option for your TV advert.

Mini Theory Task

Two people have not yet submitted this work on their theory page.

We will be beginning the Film Studies module tomorrow - you will not have time to go back and catch up!

?????????

"WHY?"...this is the most important question to remember when doing your practical and theory work.

If you chose to shoot your video using close-ups - why?
If you chose to cut your video quickly - why?
If you chose to add in a godzilla scream at the end - why?

This is just a gentle reminder as your hand in date for assignment 1 is tomorrow and there may be a few "whys" you can add into your blog posts.

Remember, there must always be an answer when Paul and I ask you "why?"

"Riddle me this, riddle me that..."
